World Enough, And Time
The author Andrew Marvell (1623-1678) said it best, “Had we but world enough, and time.” Everyone I know feels they don’t have enough time and want more of it. And so we continue to search for more time in our days, our weeks, and our years to do more of whatever we think it is we need to do. But is this true? According to John Stossel of ABC’s 20/20 “Experts say we have more time now because we’re working less, marrying later, having fewer children and retiring earlier.” So what is our problem?
It is not that we have less time; it’s what we’re choosing to do with the time we have. Somewhere along the way we have come to believe that we can have it all, do it all, and never pay the price. But that is fallacy, we must pay a price. The price might be our health, our family, our relationships, our sanity, our job, our money, or a million other choices.
So what are we to do? First, for several days or a week, keep track of how you use your time. Keep it simple, don’t make the process time consuming or you will be using up too much time keeping track of your time! You might be surprised to see that you have more free time than you realize. You also might see that you fritter away time on activities that don’t matter to you, or that you spend very little time on activities and people that you claim are important to you.
Second, become conscious of your choices and make sure your choices line up with your life priorities. Maybe you don’t need a page full of New Year’s Resolutions that you’ll never complete. Maybe you only need to learn how to make better choices and be true to your core values and priorities.
In the words of T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) “Only through time time is conquered.” Don’t expect to change things overnight. We live in an ‘immediate, got to have it now society’, but real life seldom works that way. Real life is lived in small steps, mistakes, and more small steps. Be realistic with your expectations of yourself.
