WHAT'S ON MY MIND?
I don’t know about you, but something happens to my brain and best laid plans during the summer months. In my case it might have something to do with the 11-year-old stalking around my house. But it’s more than that. Maybe it’s the fact that somewhere, someone, at any given time is leaving for vacation, or on vacation, or taking a few days off, so the routine of life and business is disrupted. Maybe it’s the heat and longer hours of sunlight, or softball games, pools full of people, and golf courses that speak to us as we drive by. Whatever it is, summer is different. So this month, my newsletter is also different. Instead of one topic I am choosing to share with you a hodgepodge of wisdom, quotes, and insights that I keep throwing into a file with the thought of doing something with them someday. Today is someday and I hope they make you laugh, think, and live the rest of your summer with creative energy!
-As I watch TV commercials touting firming lotions for trouble spots, it dawns on me I’d like to immerse my entire body in firming lotion, kind of like Houdini jumping into a large glass vat of water in a magic act. Or maybe just in a tub normally used for mud baths, then set the timer and take me out when the DONE light comes on.
A bottle of lotion daintily rubbed on daily is not enough to do what I’d like done. I prefer EXTREME FIRMING which, if pitched correctly, could possibly turn into a highly rated summer TV show. If anyone out there knows a television producer, please send them my way.
-Do you think we will ever be able to say, “Remember the good ole days when the phone would ring and ring and ring during dinner and when you finally answered there would be a long pause until a strange voice from a country far away would say, “Hello, is this . . .? (And then proceed to mangle your name, so much for caller ID and No Call lists.)
-Having doubts about yourself is normal and sometimes a necessary process toward insight and meaning. What isn’t normal and just plain wrong is exposing every doubt you have to everyone you meet and to constantly be looking for outside validation. Only expose your true self, your realness, to people you trust and respect. Our current world of reality shows makes us think it’s OK to let everything out, but the truth is it sets you up for undue criticism. Not everyone has your best interest in mind so guard your doubts and your dreams.
Lessons learned over the years from my daughter:
-Onions are round and look like a ball, but they don’t bounce very well.
-Even though powdered cocoa looks like chocolate, it doesn’t taste near as good!
-Pumpkins are round and look like a ball, but they don’t bounce very well either. (And it is very embarrassing to your mother if you choose to try it out on live television!)
-Just because you like peaches one day, doesn’t mean they won’t end up on the floor the next.
-Spoons are nice, but sometimes your hand works better when you’re really hungry.
-Boxes of cake mixes make great building blocks and step stools.
-My most expensive silk negligee looks better on a toddler as a Halloween costume than it ever did on me.
-A piece of masking tape can occupy a little person for at least 10-15 minutes. (I think I’ve known some adults that could go for 20!)
And finally:
-Before summer gets away from you, start making a list of fun things you’ve done and another list of things you want to do before summer is over. If you don’t you’ll never to be able to remember the good stuff and you’ll regret all the things you wanted to do before summer was gone. Don’t get obsessive with this, do not buy a special notebook or binder for your list, a piece of paper taped to the refrigerator will work just fine. Now get out there!

Last Month’s Answer:
There were no footprints. Therefore, the man and package fell from the sky. The package was the parachute that had not opened up. That is why the man was dead.
Congratulations to Evelyn Beussink for being our winner. Please contact me Evelyn so I can send you your prize.
