DARLA UPDATE

~Just when you might be thinking I dropped off the face of the earth—I’m back! I apologize for how long it has taken, but my website makeover is complete. Everything has a new look and many new functions, making it easier for me and easier for those who visit the site.  In the months ahead there will be more additions to the site, but there should be no interruption of my newsletter, YEAH! Take a moment, check it out, and let me know what you think.

~Welcome to new subscribers I met at the PRIMO conference in Wichita this month. I look forward to your feedback.

SUMMER FUN?

Can you tell by the question mark that I am a little skeptical about the fun part? It’s not that I don’t like summer, (although my body and hot & humid don’t mix too well), it’s just that the expectations and the reality don’t match up. The media touts summer as this laid back, read a book, barbeque, take life easy season when you have all the time in the world.  I don’t know who they get their information from but for me, summer has turned into one of the busiest times of the year.

Anyone with kids will tell you summer consists of balancing childcare, summer school, swimming lessons, ballgames and practices, camps for every sport, camps for organizations and churches, and more chauffeuring of bodies from activity to activity. I can’t think of one day this summer that I’ve had the luxury of saying, “What do I want to do today?”  Summer also seems to have more chores; weeds grow, lawns need mowing, towels and swimsuits are hanging everywhere to dry, gardens need tending, and plants need watering.  Then you have the summer social whirl of graduations, weddings, class reunions, family reunions, church picnics, golf tournaments, county fairs, vacations that require you getting ready for them longer than you’ll be gone and ‘let’s cook outside and call it a party’ times.

OK, maybe it does seem like I’m a summer grouch, but I think it’s just because I’m tired.  And from what I hear, I’m not alone.  In typical American fashion, we try to make everything bigger, better and more to the point of exhaustion.  It’s not that summer isn’t fun, it’s just too much! (And I don’t want anyone reading this to assume my age has anything to do with it because my 12-year-old is tired too!)

So what can we do about it? We make choices. Just like in every other facet of our life, we must weed through the “have tos” and “ought tos” and only commit to doing what we really want to do. (If right now you are thinking, “But I want to do it all”, please contact me later for a private session.) You can do this, be tough, and make the hard choices. Enjoy the journey of summer at a slower pace or it will all become a mindless blur. But do it fast because summer’s almost over! :)

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

(In response to me ranting one day in June about everything I had to do and there was no way I could get it all done my daughter replied),

“You have a full plate and no fork.”

WOMEN - IT’S YOUR TURN!

Are you tired of putting everyone else’s needs first? Would you like some time to focus and reflect on what you’d really like your life to be like? It’s your turn!

I am currently developing retreats for women aimed at Self Restoration that will allow you to renew, restore, and rediscover yourself with fun and learning thrown in. Each event will be perfect for friends, work colleagues, team building and connecting, and Mothers & Adult daughters. Retreats will be held in picturesque Arrow Rock, Missouri (www.arrowrock.org) allowing you to get away for peace and reflection without the travel hassle. Each personal development event will begin on Friday evening and run through Saturday evening or Sunday noon, depending on preferences. I would love your input as I finalize my plans for this fall’s schedule.  Initial offerings will focus on:

  1. Help! Overwhelmed and Dangerous.
  2. Pampering Yourself 101
  3. What do I want and how do I get it?

If you have suggestions and/or would like more information email Me. Thank you!

MENSA MOMENT

A boat is floating in a pool. We mark the flotation line. If we drop rocks into the pool and make the water level rise five inches, will the water rise more or less than five inches compared to the mark we made on the boat?

Email your answer to Darla. Correct answers received within the first week will be entered in our prize drawing.

Last Mensa Moment Answer:

Two blankets one inch thick each, because the air between them also acts as insulation.  Congratulations to Christina M. Hayn.  Please email me Christina so I can send your prize.
