CHOOSY PEOPLE
Lately I’ve become aware of the number of advertisements touting ‘choosy’ as a desirable personality trait. We’re all familiar with the slogan, “Choosy mothers choose Jiff.” Other commercials extol the virtues of being choosy when it comes to lattes, hairdressers, cheese slices, juice drinks, automobiles, and even toilet paper. I don’t have a problem with being choosey, but I do have a problem with what we choose to be choosy about. I’ve always seen the privilege and responsibility of choice as being related to creativity. In fact, I think creativity is all about personal choices and being able to see alternatives and possibilities in our lives and work. Being able to make choices is what makes our life ours and not a cookie cutter copy of someone else’s. Our choices give us some semblance of control in an out of control world. If you want to be choosy, try the following categories.

1. Your Actions
In the course of a day you make hundreds of choices about what you will do or not do. What you choose determines who you are, will be come, and how people view you. Mother was right; actions do speak louder than words. So make yours authentic and purposeful and forget trying to blame everyone else for your bad ones.

2. Your Attitude
Attitude stems directly from what you think. How we think and see the world filters everything we experience. You can control what you think. You can short circuit bad, negative, or damaging thoughts before they become a habit and turn you into a jerk. You can choose to focus on positive, empowering and productive thoughts, and the attitude will follow. We’d all like it if you did.

3. Your Friends
A touchy subject I know, but it’s true. I hear a lot of whining about dishonest friends, bossy friends, too–clingy friends and thoughtless friends. Are these people really friends? If not, get away (tactfully please, no scenes) or be a real friend, speak up and (again tactfully) deal with them on the point that’s bothering you. Don’t tell them what they should do; tell them how what they do makes you feel. If you value the friendship it is worth a try. If not, there are positive, uplifting people in the world you can choose to make friends with.

4. Your Words
We’ve all had the occasional ‘open mouth, insert foot’ moment. Choosing our words carefully is one of the most important choices we can make. Often it is not what you say, but how you say it. Words and how we choose to deliver them have a huge impact on our lives and the lives of people we know. Ask any politician.

5. Your Health
Sure we have some givens; we can’t choose our ancestors, but we can choose what to do with the body we have. Most of us know what the right choices are when it comes to diet, exercise, check-ups, and harmful substances, yet we consistently make bad choices. Our health and quality of life depend on little choices we make in the course of a day. Make wise ones; I want you to stick around.

This list could go on and on, but you would probably stop reading. Just remember, I’m not saying you shouldn’t choose your lattes, hairdressers, cheese slices, juice drinks, automobiles, and toilet paper but please get the big life choices right first!
