Balancing Act
Happy fall and hello to everyone! I want to extend a special welcome to new subscribers I met this month from the Missouri Association of Electrical Cooperatives Accounts Group and the Missouri Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association.
In my presentation to the Missouri RV Dealers Association I touched on the subject of Creating Balance in our lives. As we slide into this fall-winter ‘several months of holidays’ time of year you will begin to see articles in every major magazine and newspaper dealing with balance as you juggle the demands of the season.
In reality, it is the day-to-day life we lead apart from holidays that needs the most balance. Everywhere I speak I hear from people that feel pushed, stretched, stressed and still feeling guilty that they are not doing enough. (Myself included!)
The answer? First, there is no one answer, but there are many choices. As we have heard many times, it is not the circumstance that is the problem, it is what we do about it, and ultimately our responses and reactions are chosen by us.
I choose to approach it as cross training. To keep in shape I power walk, do aerobics, attend body ball classes and do weight training. Some months I’m stuck on aerobics and can’t bear to step on a treadmill. After awhile I’ve had it with an organized class and just want to head outdoors for a few miles a day. While I am always adjusting my routine to work with my schedule and my moods, I never quit.
That’s how I approach life. I determine what works for me, making sure I am not neglecting any part of my life. I am constantly adjusting what I do because sometimes I get bored with one way, or come up with a better way, or find I have outgrown something along the way.
Life is not static, and making changes/adjustments along the way doesn’t make you unstable. If you have been to a circus and closely watched the high wire performers, you know they are constantly adjusting and moving every so slightly to keep their balance. We can learn to do the same.
