It's Beyond Me!

I had it all planned. I'd done my usual mulling it over before I fell asleep and while driving alone in the car, (which seem to be some of my most creative moments) and I'd decided this month's message would be about circles. Not ordinary circles, but the circles of people we find ourselves in and out of in the course of a lifetime. This was going to be good!

Then Monday I woke up feeling sick with some kind of 'headache can't breathe through my nose but it feels worse than just allergies' thing and my whole schedule and motivation was thrown off. Every time the "Write e-newsletter" reminder came up on my computer I hit the snooze button until I had finally put it off. But Tuesday morning wasn't much better. My head was throbbing and I still couldn't breathe right. Since sleep was no longer working, at 4:15 am I got out of bed and went downstairs to fix myself fresh ice water and take more pain relievers. This is when I began to lose control. Standing in my kitchen I noticed it seemed rather dark considering I knew the night before was a full moon and then it dawned me, it was the lunar eclipse!

Against all better judgment I went out the door barefoot, in my pjs, a fist full of tissues and flashlight in one hand and my ice water in the other. I started on the deck, but I couldn't see the moon for the trees. I ventured off into the yard, but the trees still blocked my view. By this time I was hopping around the yard, dodging walnuts shells dropped by overindulgent squirrels, wondering why in the world I didn't put something on my feet! I finally discovered the moon by crossing the street to a vacant lot we own with fewer trees.

The moon was spectacular to watch as the Earth's shadow crept across its surface, slowly eclipsing it and gradually changing colors as I stood in hushed reverence. Losing tract of time I stared up at the sky feeling simultaneously insignificant and special in the presence of this event that was clearly beyond me. And that is the point.

In reality, much within and above the world is beyond me; beyond us. Yet we scurry around day to day as if it were all about us. We make lists (I do love my lists), we make deals, and we make a difference as best we can, but it doesn't hurt for us to occasionally be reminded that there is something beyond us. It is up to each of us to determine whether this realization takes the performance pressure off or makes us feel more important to view ourselves as part of a bigger design. All I know is that on August 28th, before dawn, I was changed a bit and it felt right.

So my circle article was put on hold for another month. But that's OK, because there are bigger things happening if we'd only notice.
