APRIL FOOLISH: Musings from a wild month!
I have one of those brains that rarely rests, which explains why I am so focused this year on being still; it’s really hard for me to do! Some days my brain traffic is so congested I feel the thoughts and tangent thoughts are ping-ponging around in my head at the speed of light. When a good, or funny, or thought provoking idea whizzes by I try to quickly record it, (usually on small scraps of paper that get lost on my desk or thrown into a file folder), so I can maybe, just maybe do something meaningful with it later. In order to clean up my desk and my brain I am sharing this month a collection of totally unrelated musings and reflections that occurred to me during the month of April. I cannot say that every random thought that I will share with you this month with resonate with your heart and soul; I hope some of them will just make you smile!
*Did you know that if you Google “renting purses” you come up with 465,000 results? I first heard about this phenomenon on a network morning show and, thinking it was too weird, just had to explore. Some sites call it ‘borrowing’ but is it borrowing if you are paying for it? I don’t think so. What disturbs me is that the whole premise, according to the site, “Bag Borrow or Steal” (catchy isn’t it?), is you simply, “show off, send back, show off, send back and repeat as your mood changes.” For members (yes there is a membership club!) $100 a week or $295 a month will buy you a delectable Gucci Tote with scarf; guest pricing would be $143 a week or $379 a month. I find the whole topic simultaneously disgusting and fascinating. As I check out “The Purse Blog” (you’re not really surprised are you?) I discover that people not only have time to care about renting purses, and on some sites jewelry and sunglasses, they want to talk about it too. Think how many gallons of gas you could buy if you hadn’t rented that Gucci purse last month?
*During the last month I had the pleasure of staying in beautiful hotels both here and in Mexico. In Mexico I explored the Maya ruins which led me to wonder; when we are gone and archeologists and explorers come upon the remains of massive hotel complexes, what will they surmise about our culture? Perhaps that we lived in castles with large common rooms and smaller cells for sleeping? Or we resided in thatch roofed huts that were fully equipped with every electronic convenience and HD-TV? How will they explain all the replicas: Las Vegas has the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and Venetian Canals to name a few? Hmmmm, maybe we’re all wrong about ancient civilizations?
*Found recently in my junk mail was a special bulletin from Johns Hopkins entitled, “Secrets for the Second Half of Life” that scared the wits out of me! I didn’t need this to remind me that I’m getting older; finding white hairs when I pluck my eyebrows is proof enough. The highlighted topics of this important document were less than encouraging: Acetaminophen alert!, Beyond the Little Blue Pill, and Where did I leave my keys? Get me off this mailing list!!
*On a more positive note, a survey of 1,780 drivers for a British car-insurance company found that listening to music may help reduce road rage and decrease the chance of an accident. So when you hit the highway, crank up the tunes!
Thanks so much for listening. I can see my desk again and will immediately start jotting down new notes for another time.

BEING STILL - THE CAMPAIGN (No, it doesn’t involve running for office!)
As part of 2008 The Year of Being Still I am producing Being Still artwork and other objects to keep myself and others on track. I envision two and three dimensional art, t-shirts, paper goods, and who knows, maybe billboards, (OK maybe that is going to far) to remind us, motivate us, and compel us to BE STILL. Why? Because it’s time! Watch your email for the unveiling of my shopping cart and BE STILL items. Can being still for 5 minutes a day actually change your life? Yes, because every positive action we take makes a difference.
